How we work out walking times

Tested against the walk times airports publish, our ranges matched 26 of 27 routes at a normal walking pace.

How accurate the times are

We compared our times with the figures that Denver, JFK, Newark and LaGuardia publish, for 27 routes. At 1.35 meters a second, a normal walking pace, the middle of our range fell inside the published figure on 26 of the 27.

Our full ranges overlapped the published figure on 27 of the 27, so we show a range rather than one number. Run on 18 October 2026.

At JFK Terminal 5 and LaGuardia Terminal C we add a fixed allowance at the checkpoint so our times match the airport's own figures.

How a walking time is worked out

We trace the route along the airport's walkways, from the exit of the checkpoint you pick to the gate.

The low end of the range is that route at 1.5 meters a second, a brisk walk; the high end is 1.2 meters a second, an easy walk with a bag.

Times start after you pass security. The security line is not in them, because it changes by the minute.

Trains and buses

Where a route uses a train inside the airport, we add its ride and a wait of nothing at best and one full gap between trains at worst.

Where an airport runs a bus to a gate and publishes no time for it, we show the walk to the bus and then say plus the bus ride.

Where the walk starts

Each checkpoint is placed from the airport's own map and named as the airport names it.

Where we are less sure of the exact exit, the page says start point approximate and the range starts a minute lower and ends 2 minutes higher.

When you leave security

Some connections mean going out through security and back in.

For those we list each walk and the train or bus, then say plus the security line, which varies, and link to the airport's live wait times. We do not add them into one total.

Airline lists

Which airlines fly from which terminal comes from each airport's own airline list, with the date we read it.

We check the lists every 4 weeks and change a page only on the airport's or the airline's own word.
